Connecting African Descent Youth & Families to the African Continent
The Alkebulan Bridge Project aims to bridge this gap of knowledge and cultural awareness among youth in African American communities. Our program is designed to reconnect participants with their African heritage through immersive experiences in Ghana and Nigeria, where they can explore their ancestral roots, learn about diverse cultures, and understand their history beyond the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
MISSION
The Alkebulan Bridge Project transforms how urban youth of African descent see and experience their world by first transforming how they see and experience themselves (past, present & future), and the continent of Africa. Our mission is to take as many Black Americans of African descent back to Africa as possible introducing youth to African leaders in education, business, music, art, agriculture, technology. The opportunity consists of visits to museums, universities, historical sites, and nature reserves on the Continent. In order to qualify, participants must be between ages 13 and 30 and be of African descent.

The Term Alkebulan
Alkebulan is a term often used to refer to the continent of Africa. The word is said to derive from ancient African languages and has been interpreted to mean "the mother of mankind" or "the garden of Eden." It reflects a rich cultural heritage and historical significance, as it is believed to be one of the oldest names for the continent inhabited by various civilizations and peoples throughout history.

Key Attractions
The Alkebulan Bridge Project offers participants key attractions in Nigeria and Ghana, including the Nigerian Beach Side, Badagry Slave Museum, and Olumo Rock. They will engage in community outreach and visit local orphanages and the OOPL Wildlife Park. In Ghana, highlights include Black Star Square, the Nkrumah Museum, and the Cape Coast Castle.

Throughout his career, Dr. Howard has passionately engaged with communities across Africa, leading numerous tours and mission trips that connect Americans with the continent’s heritage. His educational excursions have fostered meaningful relationships with local chiefs and kings, enriching the cultural exchange and understanding between diverse populations. He has also organized safaris and cultural trips, allowing participants to immerse themselves in authentic African experiences.
Dr. Kenneth Howard is a distinguished expert and historian specializing in the Bantu peoples and Niger-Congo cultures, dedicating his career to uncovering the rich histories and vibrant traditions of these groups. His extensive knowledge encompasses various Bantu tribes, including the Kikuyu, Meru, Luhya, Kisii, Zulu, Xhosa, Yoruba, Mossi, Bini-Edo, Igbo, Ibibio, Tutsi, Chewa, Nguni, Sotho-Tswana, Lemba, Kamba, Sukuma, and their traditions, as well as the Akan tribes such as the Ashanti, Ga, Fante, and Ewe.
